Welcome to Week 1 of the Cascade Bloom Quilt Sew Along (SAL)! This is the first SAL I've done since the Sky Cabin release in 2022, besides Toad Circle, of course! I'm so happy to have you here! This week, we will be picking out fabric. You honestly can't go wrong with colors for this pattern, so I'll give you a couple of hints to get started.

But first - how much fabric do you need for Cascade Bloom? Check out the fabric requirements for this quilt below! This quilt pattern offers sizes from Baby to Bed size. You can choose from the 5-Tone version (AKA the cover version) in all four quilt sizes or a 2-Tone version in the Throw size! Mix it up by combining a couple colors in the 5-Tone version to make a 3-Tone Cascade Bloom quilt too! Keep reading for more information about the 3-Tone quilt.

Tips:

Check out the hashtag on IG

There are tons of amazing samples from my pattern testers to get some inspiration from! You can also see all the incredible mock-ups floating around, plus many kits from our awesome partner shops that are currently available. Instagram is usually a great starting point!

Make your own mock-ups

It's much easier to visualize what your quilt will look like when you make a digital mock-up first. I don't know about you, but I like to know exactly what the end product will look like before I start cutting my fabric! Here are a couple of websites where you can easily do this: QuiltInk.com and QuiltMockup.com.

Or if you like the traditional paper and colored pencils approach, here's a coloring page for you to download and print!

Grab a kit

There are a TON of amazing kits available right now. See some of them in our Cascade Bloom Quilt - Kit Round-up blog.

Follow the value guide below:

PICK ONE OF EACH:
Gradient value guide from light to dark, featured in the Week 1 blog post of the Cascade Bloom Quilt Sew Along, helping participants select and combine fabric tones for their quilt projects.
If you want a dark background, start with the Dark tone as your background tone and then work your way up (e.g., Med/Dark being Color 2, and Light Tone being Color 5).

Reverse the above if you want to use a light background tone.
Monochrome Cascade Bloom Quilt design in black, white, and gray by Toad & Sew, highlighted in the Week 1 blog post of the Cascade Bloom Quilt Sew Along, providing a sophisticated color palette for fabric selection and design ideas.
If you follow this formula, you will not be disappointed in your Cascade Bloom Quilt! It offers a wonderful gradient and looks good in almost every color combination!

Combining Colors

If you're looking for something a little simpler, you can combine the following colors to create a 3-Tone version of the pattern. That's what @JessiRash did with her bed-sized sample.

All you have to do is combine Colors 2 and 4 and Colors 3 and 5! This method really packs a punch and shows off the pattern in an interesting way. It highlights the checkered components, which are very popular right now! If this is the vibe you’re going for, then the 3-Tone is for you. The pattern also comes with a 2-Tone version, but those cutting instructions are only available in the throw-size, so keep that in mind!
